Hey there, imagine you are a powerful wizard, sent into a realm to fight an evil lord. After moments you know that this is a fight you cannot win directly so you gather your own army to join an evil lord and plan a betrayal on him in the future. Then these foolish morrons show up with another, weaker wizard (who thinks that some small people can outmatch an evil lord), destroy your army, your sweet home and steal all your power. And after some time they actually succeed in their quest and go on a journey back home.
Now, what will You do, defeated by some morrons who stole everything you love and fullfilled your quest in a foolish way, instead of using your cunning plan? I would go to their home and FUCK IT UP, throw away dignity, do as much damage as you can before they return back home, make your revenge impossible to forget, let the results last for a long time.
That is what Saruman did, and that's why he will always be my nr. 1 character in Lord of the Rings. The whole book is worth reading just for this one moment in Shire.
